New Year, New Pests

The holidays have come and gone. Many are entering the new year with a list of resolutions. While some of the top resolutions every year are along the lines of working out, saving money, and organizing the home, pest control experts recommend adding pest-proofing to the to-do list. NW Pest Control, in partnership with the National Pest Management Association, is reminding homeowners that pest infestations are a year-round concern, especially in the winter.

Prevention is key

At NW Pest Control, we recommend homeowners get ahead of any potential pest problems by taking some extra time in January to ensure their home is prepared for the threat of rodents, cockroaches, and other critters. Pest-proofing should be a quick and easy task, which is much better than having to deal with costly damage or health issues as a result of an infestation down the road!

To help reduce pests in the home this year:

  • Keep a Clean Kitchen: Food attracts pests to the home, which can quickly turn into a full-blown infestation. Regularly dispose of garbage, clean up dirty dishes, and wipe down counters. Make sure baking ingredients, such as flour and oats, are stored in airtight containers.
  • Seal Up Cracks: Block any crevices or holes that provide entry to your home. Install door sweeps on exterior doors and seal the gap between the floor and the door.
  • Store Firewood Away from the Home: Store wood away from the home and make sure to inspect it for critters when bringing it inside.
  • Pest-Proof Your Yard: Remove dead bushes, branches, and fallen leaves that could provide nesting or hiding sites for pests. Try and leave a minimum of an 18-inch gap between vegetation and the foundation.
