April is National Pest Management Month, an annual observance recognized by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) highlighting the vital role pest control plays in protecting public health, food and property from the threats posed by pests. This April, NW Pest Control is joining fellow members of the pest control industry in educating consumers on the importance of working with a professional to both prevent and treat pest issues before they become a serious issue.

While you might not know it, pest control professionals protect the food we eat, the places we live and the people we love from pest threats. Pests like cockroaches, rodents and ticks can transmit dangerous disease causing pathogens and termites are capable of causing serious property damage that is often not covered by insurance. Because of this, we strongly advise against DIY treatments. Licensed pest professionals have the knowledge, tools and training to safely and properly eliminate pest infestations.

A 2023 survey commissioned by the NPMA and conducted online by The Harris Poll found that 88% of Americans have had bugs, insects or rodents in their home in the past year. Despite being something so many experience, pest issues are a serious issue and should be handled immediately.

To help consumers protect their homes and health during peak pest season this spring and summer, NW Pest Control reccomends the following tips:

  • Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home including entry points for utilities and pipes.
  • Keep tree branches and shrubbery well-trimmed and away from the house.
  • Keep basements, attics, and crawl spaces well-ventilated and dry.
  • Store garbage in sealed containers and dispose of it regularly.

Survey Methodology

This survey was conducted online within the United States by The Harris Poll on behalf of NPMA between March 2 – 6, 2023, among 2,044 adults ages 18+, among whom over 1,500 are homeowners. The sampling precision of Harris online polls is measured by using a Bayesian credible interval. For this study, the sample data is accurate to within + 3.9 percentage points using a 95% confidence level.
