Summer is hot, especially times during this summer.  While summer brings warm weather, cook-outs and beach days, it also is peak mosquito season. Known as the deadliest animal in the world, mosquitoes are capable of transmitting diseases that can cause severe health problems and even death.

West Nile virus, dengue fever and eastern equine encephalitis are all diseases transmitted by mosquitoes in the U.S. Globally, malaria and yellow fever are a concern, especially in areas with limited healthcare resources. Reactions to these diseases vary depending on the person affected, but in some cases can be fatal. If you’re planning on spending time outside this summer, it is important to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

Studies have shown that mosquitoes can be attracted to different people for a variety of reasons, including the color of their clothing and if they are wearing perfume or cologne. Additionally, blood type and body temperature could impact whether you’re bitten.

Here are a few tips on how to keep yourself protected from mosquitoes this summer:

  • Properly apply insect repellent containing at least 20 percent DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus; follow label instructions closely and reapply as needed
  • Wear closed-toe shoes, long pants and long sleeve shirts when spending time outdoors to limit skin exposure
  • Avoid wearing dark colors, floral prints and sweet-smelling perfumes and colognes while outside
  • Avoid being outside during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active
