Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to manage. These resourceful bugs can easily hitch a ride in suitcases, on clothing and in other human belongings, allowing them to spread quickly and infest homes, transportation systems, offices and any other place where people gather. These pests are infamous for their ability to reproduce rapidly, creating major infestations in short periods of time. However, it is not their ability to quickly multiply that puts them on our list for strange mating rituals; instead it’s how they reproduce that makes people cringe. Bed bugs practice a mating behavior known as “traumatic insemination” where the male pierces the abdomen of the female to directly inseminate her body cavity. Male bed bugs often attempt to mate with other males, killing them in the process.
Although small in size, they can quickly reproduce and survive for months without feeding, allowing undetected infestations to rapidly grow. After feeding, bed bugs will move to secluded places to digest mate and lay eggs. Female bed bugs can lay around 1-5 eggs per day. However they are able to produce well over 500 eggs during their life cycle. Once the eggs hatch, bed bug nymphs will grow into adults after roughly 21 days. On average, it only takes bed bugs 5-10 minutes to feed, and they are able to survive for several months without a blood meal.
